Flash Flood Watch Issued for Salida and Buena Vista

Heavy rain will be possible this afternoon and evening over the Decker, Hayden Pass, Junkins and Spring burn scars as well as the Chalk Cliffs.

With increased moisture over the area today, showers and thunderstorms will be likely over and near the mountains, mainly in the afternoon and evening hours. Some storms will be slow moving and have the potential to produce heavy rain.

If heavy rain moves over the Decker, Hayden Pass, Junkins or Spring burn scars, or the Chalk Cliffs, flash flooding could occur.

Flash Flood Watch includes the cities of Alpine, Granite, St Elmo, Salida, Buena Vista, La Veta Pass, Poncha Pass, Blanca Peak, Cuchara, Stonewall, Weston, Spanish Peaks, Coaldale, Cotopaxi, Hillside, Howard, Swissvale, Texas Creek, Rye, and Walsenburg.

The Flash Flood Watch is for:

  • The Chalk Cliffs and for the Decker, Hayden Pass, Junkins and
    Spring burn scars.
  • From noon Sunday (July 26) through this evening.
  • Heavy rain from slow moving thunderstorms will be possible.
  • Flash flooding over the burns scars will be possible. The ground in burn scar areas is unstable, so debris flows and mudslides could occur in and around the burn scar.

PRECAUTIONARY ACTIONS

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action if Flash Flood Warnings are issued.
