A Park County businessman involved in a long-running and contentious dispute with nearby homeowners has been sentenced to jail after a judge found him in contempt of court.
Adam Shirley was ordered to serve 60 days in the Park County Jail in Fairplay for continuing to operate his waste transfer facility near the intersection of Highway 285 and Wandcrest Park Road, despite a court order requiring him to shut it down.
Earlier this year, neighbors filed a lawsuit challenging a zoning change that allowed the transfer station to operate. A judge ultimately ruled against both Shirley and Park County, ordering the facility to cease operations. According to the court, Shirley continued running the transfer station in violation of that ruling.
Shirley operates a trash hauling business that serves approximately 9,000 homes across the county. He is currently appealing the decision that ordered the closure of the transfer station. That appeal is scheduled to be heard in late January.
Until then, the court’s shutdown order remains in effect.
