Marilyn Eddy (Dunton) Lawton of Salida, Colorado, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2025, at the age of 91. She was born on January 3, 1934, in North Adams, Massachusetts, where she met her husband, Edward Lawton. She was predeceased by her husband and their son, Richard Lawton. Marilyn is survived by her sister, Shirley Rose of Salida; her son, Mark Lawton (Lucinda) of Howard; her daughter, Nancy Lawton Eddy of Salida; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.
Marilyn and Ed raised their family in Connecticut and New Hampshire before settling in Charleston, South Carolina. While in Charleston, Marilyn taught grade school and enjoyed the beaches, magnolia trees, crape myrtle, oysters, stone crab and other delicacies foreign to her native New England. After retiring, she and Ed participated in many traveling adventures through Elderhostel. Next they joined their daughter in Salida, and the rest of her family soon followed.
During her time in Salida Marilyn formed friendships with local volunteers at the Bus Stop Boutique and the Boys and Girls Club. She joined book clubs and found pleasure in caring for her flowers and pets, and afternoon chats on the porch with her sister and an occasional neighbor. The staff at Columbine and those who knew her best will remember her calm demeanor, warm smile and occasionally bluntly humorous delivery.
Her son and daughter wish to honor her with this poem written by Nancy “Lawton” Eddy…
Mother mine my precious one, gone now to a place divine this journey done
Mother mine gave me first breath and I in time held you in death
Mother mine you made us strong, grapes from the vine we carry on
Peace now, peace sweet mother mine, no pain disturbs your sleep
and in the heavens all is known, though here on earth we weep
Keep me, keep me mother mine, forever at your breast
for I will always be your child, and in your love I find my rest
