Gary Buchanan was born a small child in the Hudson Valley of New York. His father worked for IBM which stands for I’ve Been Moved! The family moved to Boulder when Gary was 10. As a junior at Fairview High School in 1971, Gary was asked by a if he would be interested in doing a show on the local radio station. That’s where it all began. After graduation, Gary attended a private broadcasting school in Minneapolis. He began his professional career at age 19 in Torrington, Wyoming, and went on to work on-air in Boulder, Longmont, Estes Park and Greeley as well as Grand Island, Nebraska, where he met Terri and swept her off her feet. In 1991, Gary teamed up with Rolland Johnson, who founded Three Eagles Communications. They bought and managed radio stations in Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota and Illinois. In 2000, they purchased the Salida-based Heart of the Rockies Radio stations. Three Eagles eventually sold the Midwest stations, and Gary and Terri settled into Chaffee County, where they continue to manage Heart of the Rockies Radio. Gary believes it takes great people to make great local radio. So far, this team has about 100 awards for Broadcast Excellence and has been named Small Market Stations of the Year five times in the last 11 years.
