Heart of the Rockies Radio columnist Joe Stone has posted a new story on the station’s website outlining practical steps homeowners can take to reduce wildfire risk.

Stone says the first step is scheduling a home wildfire risk assessment. Homeowners in southern Chaffee County can contact the South Arkansas Fire Protection District, while those in northern Chaffee County should call the Chaffee County Fire Protection District. Both agencies provide the assessments at no cost, thanks to funding from a Chaffee County Common Ground grant.

In addition, a free Community Forum on Wildfire Preparedness will be held tomorrow night from 6 to 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Salida. The event will feature Colorado State Forest Service Ranger Leeza Vasko, who will discuss the State Forest Service’s role in wildfire prevention and share steps residents can take to prepare for emergencies. The forum is open to the public.
