Another consequence of one of the state’s worst snowpacks in recent history is a sharp increase in hay and livestock feed prices.

Hay is currently selling for between $220 and $260 per ton, but experts warn prices could climb as high as $400 per ton if dry conditions persist. Smaller 60-pound bales are expected to cost at least $15 each.

The situation presents a double challenge for both hay producers and livestock owners. Reduced snowpack limits irrigation water, leading to lower overall production. At the same time, hot and dry growing conditions can diminish hay quality, further impacting supply and increasing costs for consumers.

Agricultural producers across the state are closely monitoring conditions as they head into the growing season.
