Colorado Parks and Wildlife is reminding residents to be “bear aware” as bears begin emerging from their dens across the state.

Wildlife officials say bears often return to areas where they previously found easy food sources, especially those tied to human activity. Residents are encouraged to secure trash, remove bird feeders, and keep pet food indoors to help prevent unwanted encounters.

CPW is also launching a new round of grant funding aimed at reducing human-bear conflicts. A total of $1 million will be available to support community-based solutions.

Grants are open to local governments, homeowners associations, community groups, businesses, and individuals. Applications can be found on CPW’s website and must be submitted by May 29.
