COVID Variants Increases Vaccination Urgency in San Luis Valley

Variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus are driving the urgency to get more San Luis Valley residents vaccinated against COVID-19.

The two variants in the San Luis Valley are B.1.1.7 (the UK variant, detected in December 2020) and  B.1.427/B.1.429 (the California variant, detected in February 2021). They are considered to be “variants of concern,” meaning they spread more easily and can cause more severe illness than other variants. Variants of concern also have potential to impact diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of COVID-19. Their presence in our area makes it even more important that those who have COVID symptoms get tested.

Getting vaccinated is the most effective tool we have to fight COVID-19 and all of its variants, and end the pandemic. In the San Luis Valley, 55% of eligible people (age 16 and over) have yet to receive their first dose. In a recent study, vaccines reduced the likelihood of getting COVID-19 by 93%, preventing hospitalizations and deaths.

We still have a long way to go to reach herd immunity. Wearing masks and social distancing are still needed for prevention, especially for those who are not yet vaccinated. To sign up for a vaccine, check with your local public health agency, hospital, pharmacy, or clinic. A list of vaccine providers and their contact information can be found at slvphp.com, or call 1-877-CO VAX CO (1-877-268-2926).
