The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) is warning backcountry users of increased avalanche danger across parts of the state following recent snowfall.
According to CAIC, avalanche danger is currently rated between moderate and considerable, meaning dangerous conditions exist in the backcountry. Officials say the risk is especially elevated in areas that have received up to a foot of new snow.
Backcountry travelers are being urged to use extreme caution when approaching steep slopes, as fresh snow combined with underlying weak layers could trigger avalanches. CAIC emphasizes that even human-triggered avalanches are possible under these conditions.
Officials recommend checking the latest avalanche forecasts before heading out, carrying proper safety gear, and avoiding high-risk terrain when conditions are unstable.
