Winter officially begins this Sunday, and the Colorado State Patrol is reminding drivers that the season brings a significant increase in traffic crashes statewide.
According to CSP, just over a quarter of all crashes recorded each year occur during the winter months. Officials say winter recreation, holiday celebrations, seasonal weather, and more challenging driving conditions all contribute to the rise in collisions.
The State Patrol has identified speeding, lane violations, inattentive driving, animal-related crashes, and following too closely as the leading factors in winter crashes.
In response, the Colorado State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies are teaming up for the Holiday Parties DUI enforcement period. Motorists can expect increased enforcement this weekend, including saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints aimed at removing impaired drivers from the road.
Drivers are urged to slow down, stay alert, and plan ahead as winter conditions and holiday travel ramp up across the state.
