Western Slope Fires Causing Smoky Skies/Increased Traffic

Hazy, smoky conditions can be expected again today in our area due to the Pine Gulch Fire burning north of Grand Junction.

The Pine Gulch Fire has grown to 30,000 acres and has forced evacuations in the area.  The fire is burning in remote, steep slopes about 18-miles north of Grand Junction in Mesa and Garfield counties, and the rough terrain has made firefighting difficult.  It is about 7 percent contained.

Another fire, called the Grizzly Creek Fire, is said to be 1,500 acres and shut down I 70 through Glenwood Canyon yesterday.

Again, our area will be impacted by a fire in another part of the state as the Colorado Department of Transportation is advising westbound motorist to take U.S. 24 to Highway 285 to Poncha Springs where they can take Highway 50 to Grand Junction.   Eastbound travelers are being advised to take the same route, going from Highway 50 to Poncha Springs and then 285 to 24.
