Is your student using an e-bike or scooter to get to school?
There are a now a wide variety of battery operated modes of transportation in our midst, many driven by kids. E-bikes look like a regular bike with an electric motor, usually under 750 watts of power, assisting with the speed of pedaling or using a throttle to move forward. There are three classes of e-bike laws in Colorado based on top speeds allowed, age of rider, and where they can and cannot ride.
Additionally, cars need to be aware any bikes’ right of way and safe driving measures to prevent accidents. For instance, drivers must provide at least three feet of separation between the right side of the driver’s vehicle, including all mirrors when passing a bike. Before you go, it is best to know the rules of the road.
On public roads electrical assisted bicycles must adhere to the same regulations as cars. This means speed limits, lights, signals and turning. E-Bikes must stay as far right as possible.
