A small earthquake was recorded early yesterday about three miles southwest of Walsenburg.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake measured a magnitude of 3.0. Earthquakes of that size are categorized as “weak” and typically do not cause damage.
Colorado is no stranger to minor seismic activity. According to the state geological survey, Colorado is considered an active tectonic region due to the Rio Grande Rift, which runs north and south through the central part of the state.
The strongest earthquake ever recorded in Colorado occurred in 1882, when a magnitude 6.6 quake struck west of Fort Collins, causing damage across parts of Colorado and southern Wyoming.
