Whitewater rafting season is now underway across Colorado, and outfitters say drought conditions are not expected to prevent a strong summer on the rivers.
Colorado River Outfitters Association estimates that nearly half a million people will take rafting trips on Colorado rivers this season.
Executive Director David Costlow said the outlook for the season remains positive despite lower-than-average river flows. Outfitters say summer rainfall and reservoir releases are expected to help boost water levels, particularly later in the season.
According to rafting companies, lower water levels may actually create a more approachable experience for first-time rafters and families with children because reduced flows generally mean less intense and less dangerous river conditions.
Outfitters also noted that adjusting rafting routes and trip options based on daily water conditions is a routine part of operations, and this season will be no exception.
