The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office reports that a semi-tractor trailer caught fire Monday afternoon on Highway 50 near the chain station west of Maysville on Monarch Pass.
Emergency crews arrived to find the semi fully engulfed in flames. The driver, Charles Metoyer of Houston, Texas, told authorities he was headed eastbound down the pass when he heard a loud noise, possibly a tire explosion. After pulling over, he discovered his rig was on fire. Metoyer attempted to put out the flames but was forced to retreat as the cab was quickly overtaken.
Thanks to a fast response from fire crews, the blaze was contained before spreading to nearby vegetation.
🚧 Highway 50 was closed for nearly three hours as emergency responders managed the scene and ensured safety.
