The Colorado Association of School Boards honored Salida School Board Director Carrie Mattix with the McGuffey Award presented during the school board meeting on September 12, 2023.

The award honors board members from across the state who bring committed and passionate service to their board work.

Director Jenn Schuchman shared the following about Director Mattix:

Carrie Mattix was a part of many district successes: bringing Colorado Mountain College to our community; implementing mental health/SEL strategies for our students; managing in-person instruction throughout the pandemic (she is a nurse!); financing the largest teacher pay raise in our district’s history. However, it is Carrie’s caring that stands out: confirming safe protocols during COVID, working as a kitchen dish washer to keep our buildings open, insisting on mental health support for our most vulnerable students. Her proudest accomplishments include sustaining during COVID, improving staff pay, and supporting our two alternative schools. Our district is stronger because of Carrie.

Mattix will step away from her position on the Board in November to focus on her family, and career. You will also see her out supporting a variety of Spartan programs, camera in hand.

The Salida School District congratulates her on being honored with this award and thanks her for the countless hours of time she shared with the District and students.
