Rodney Dale Ommen, age 75 of Buena Vista, CO, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on February 23rd, 2025. Rodney is survived by his wife, Janet Ommen, his son Dr. Lukas Ommen (wife Sammi Ommen), and his sister Rita Snow (husband Jim Snow). Rodney is proceeded in death by his father Richard Ommen, his mother Audrey Ommen, his sisters Rickie Karns and Lana Hollon, and his brother Pete Ommen.

Rodney was born on December 7th, 1949, in Chamberlain, South Dakota and grew up primarily in the Lead/Deadwood areas of South Dakota. After graduating from high school in 1969, Rodney obtained his LPN in 1972. He worked as a nurse in the cardiology until he felt the calling to transition into public service; he attended the South Dakota Law Enforcement Academy and graduated in 1974. Rodney and Janet were married in 1978 in Spearfish, South Dakota. After spending 7 years as a patrol officer in Lead, Rodney and Janet moved to Rawlins, Wyoming in 1981.  Rodney dedicated 20 years of service to the Rawlins Police Department, serving in the Patrol Division from 1981 to 2001, and ended his career as a lieutenant.

Throughout his career as a police officer, Rodney was known as a calming presence in the field, both as a Field Training Officer and as a leader on scene. His steady demeanor and mentorship shaped many officers and contributed to a stronger future for Rawlins. His commitment to service and public safety left a lasting impact on the Rawlins Police Department and community. These values and characteristics were not just upheld in his career, but could be seen everywhere in his life, especially in his relationship with his son Lukas.

The family moved to Buena Vista, CO in 2001, where they have remained ever since. Rodney continued in his public service by working for the Chaffee County Sheriff and the Heart of the Rockies Medical Center before he fully retired. In his free time, Rodney’s favorite activities included hunting, fishing, and being outside. Rodney loved watching Lukas play sports and was incredibly proud when he watched him obtain his MD in 2024.

Rodney was a devoted, compassionate, and loving man who enjoyed the outdoors and wildlife above all else. While his family and friends will miss him each day, we should take solace in knowing that one only needs to step outside to feel closer to him. A private memorial gathering will be held for close family members at a later date. In lieu of giving flowers, the family asks that those who are able instead make a donation to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
