Quest for two ends just short for Hertrich, Demons place three at state

The perfect ending to a career came close for Micah Hertrich, but he fell just short in his bid for a second straight state title at the Pepsi Center on Saturday night.

The senior for the Demons gave up an early takedown and nearfall to Grey Neal of Paonia before he saw his bid for a comeback fall short at 6-2. Hertrich would still take second place and would lead the Demons to one of their most successful state tournaments.

The Demons as a team would finish just behind Paonia as well, with only five points seperating the two between 8th and 9th place.

The Demons also saw another pair of podium finishers, as Chris Hutchings would finish his run with only his semi-final loss on the way to a third place finish at 106. It wouldn’t be easy, as he would take a blow the the eye in the first period.

Chris was joined by brother Isaac Hutchings on the podium in sixth place at 120 pounds.

Three other Demons would fall in their opening match of day three one win shy of the podium. Those would be Jackson Helmke, Hayden Camp and Jim Gabriel.

Salida also saw a first match exit for Drew Johnson at 132, as the freshman fell saw his tournament end just shy of the podium.
