Person Who Died in Canon City Plane Crash Identified

Fremont County Coroner Randy Keller has identified the man who died in the plane that crashed on Department of Corrections property outside Canon City on Sunday. 

39-year-old David Merritt of Colorado Springs died at the scene. 

The plane was part of an instructional flight that had just taken off from Fremont County Airport. There were three people aboard the plane—a flight instructor, a student and a passenger. 

No information has been made available about the condition of the other two occupants of the aircraft.  

The plane crashed at 2 pm Sunday afternoon immediately east of Canon City and south of Highway 50, near the Super Max Prison.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
