Colorado is the first state in the nation to pass a law that removes medical debt from credit reports, helping many people in the state improve their credit scores.
However, experts say it’s ultimately up to the individual to make sure medical debt is actually removed from their report.
It is estimated that at least 700,000 Coloradans are in medical debt owing more than $1.3 billion. One in eight of us have medical debt that’s been sent to collections.
It is up to individual consumers and credit repair experts to hold the credit bureaus accountable. Copies of your credit report can be obtained by going to annualcreditreport.com. If you see that medical data is showing up even though this new law prohibits that you have the right to take action and file what is called a dispute.
