A federal jury has awarded $4 million to the estate of Jackson Maes, a detainee who died by suicide in the Saguache County Jail in 2019. The verdict was issued this week in U.S. District Court, according to The Mountain Mail.
Maes’ mother, Sarah Leiberenz, filed the lawsuit alleging that jail staff ignored warning signs, including suicidal comments made by Maes. The lawsuit also claimed that staff failed to perform timely welfare checks. His body was not discovered for eight hours.
