A significant law enforcement presence in Buena Vista’s Farm subdivision on Tuesday drew concern from residents, but officials have since clarified the situation in a statement shared on the Buena Vista Police Department’s Facebook page.

According to the department, officers responded to a report of an individual experiencing a mental health crisis who was described as violent and possibly armed. As a precaution, authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby homes.

Buena Vista Police, the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, and their co-response team jointly handled the incident. After multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact the individual, a tactical team deployed a drone inside the residence, where they discovered the person with serious, apparently self-inflicted injuries. The individual was transported to the hospital, and the co-response team is continuing follow-up support.

Police noted that because the situation stemmed from a mental health crisis, no criminal charges will be filed.
