Decker Fire Update for Thursday, October 24

The Decker Fire is listed today at 8,910 acres with 100 percent containment.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office has lifted the pre-evacuation order for Swissvale, Wellsville and Zones 2 and 3 in Howard.

Fremont County has also lifted the evacuation order for Bear Creek.  Residents of the Bear Creek area have been on evacuation since October 2nd. Residents of Bear Creek and Zone 1 in Howard remain under pre-evacuation status.

Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze has lifted all pre-evacuation orders for Chaffee County.

The fire has been fairly quiet. Weather is helping to curb fire behavior with increased relative humidity and cooler temperatures.

A Burned Area Emergency Response Team is assessing the area.  The assessment addresses post-wildfire issues, including rehabilitation and long term restoration.

BLM road closures east of Highway 285 from the top of Poncha Pass south to the vicinity of Yankee Creek have been lifted and public re-entry, primarily hunters, is taking place. National Forest lands remain closed.  BLM closures remain in effect in Fremont County.  BLM lands in Chaffee County are open, including the Methodist Mountain trail system.

Due to decreased fire activity, no smoke outlook will be provided from this point forward.  Some smoke may be visible form smoldering fuels, but is not anticipated to affect air quality.

The Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, along with Chaffee, Saguache and Fremont Counties all remain under Stage II Fire Restrictions.
