One of Cripple Creek’s most beloved traditions returns today as the town’s famous donkey herd is released to roam freely through the historic mining community.
The annual event honors the original herd of donkeys that were turned loose after retiring from work in the area’s gold mines during the early 1900s. The celebration has become a signature attraction for both residents and visitors alike.
Festivities begin at 1 p.m., featuring a special appearance by a reenactor portraying Theodore Roosevelt, who will greet visitors with a “bully welcome” in true Teddy Roosevelt fashion.
