Despite a winter storm last weekend that delivered a foot or more of snow to parts of Colorado’s high country, statewide snowpack levels remain at record lows, and forecasters say the medium-term outlook offers little immediate relief.
The recent storm provided a modest boost to snowpack totals, but statewide levels are still only at 58 percent of the median for this time of year. The Arkansas River Basin continues to be the hardest hit region in the state, with snowpack measuring just 50 percent of average.
According to forecasters, the weather pattern through mid-February is expected to bring only weak systems, producing limited snowfall in the mountains and doing little to significantly improve conditions.
Looking ahead, there is some cautious optimism. Meteorologists note that March and April could trend wetter than average, offering the potential for late-season snowfall that may help improve snowpack levels before spring runoff begins.
