Colorado’s high country is facing hazardous avalanche conditions after a powerful weekend storm buried parts of the state under deep new snow. According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC), most central and northern mountain regions picked up 1 to 2 feet of fresh snow, while areas north of Steamboat Springs saw totals closer to 3 feet.
Despite several close calls, the weekend ended without any major avalanche accidents. But forecasters warn the danger is far from over. With heavy, unstable snow now layered atop older surfaces, the considerable avalanche risk is expected to continue through the middle of the week.
Backcountry travelers are urged to check the latest CAIC forecasts and use extreme caution, or, in some areas, avoid avalanche terrain altogether—until conditions stabilize.
