In a historic decision, the Catholic Church has elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as Pope Leo XIV—the first American-born pope in history. The announcement was made May 8 following the conclusion of the papal conclave at the Vatican.
Prevost, originally from Chicago, was considered a strong contender among several prominent candidates, including Cardinals Matteo Zuppi of Italy, Pietro Parolin, and Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines. His extensive experience in Latin America and at the Vatican likely helped secure broad support from the College of Cardinals.
Pope Leo XIV joined the Augustinian Order in 1977 and later served as a missionary and church leader in Peru, where he became a naturalized citizen. Most recently, he served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, overseeing the global selection of bishops.
The new pope brings a global perspective to the role and is expected to focus on unity, pastoral care, and navigating the Church through modern challenges.
