The Chaffee County Marijuana Excise Tax Advisory Board handed the latest round of grants last night to county non-profits.

The excise tax was approved by voters in 2016, and generates money with a 2.48 percent tax on the first transfer of cannabis, meaning the tax is on growers of marijuana. For 2019, $111,000 was given to 16 non-profits out of 24 applicants.

New this year was the Jane Whitmer Award, in honor of the charter metab board member who passed away in may of last year. The recipient was denise ackert who heads “mindfulness in the jail.” A program that strives to reduce recidivisim in the chaffee county dentention center.

The 5 member metab board was chaired this year by Molly Walker, who is retiring, meaning there is an opening on the board. If you would like to serve on the marijuana excise tax advisory board, send a letter of interest to Chaffee County Commissioners.

The next round of applications for 2020 will be taken in the fall.
