Chaffee Chips, the countywide fire mitigation program, is continuing its effort to help landowners create defensible space around their homes by coordinating free neighborhood slash removal and chipping services this fall.

The next service dates are September 22–25 in Game Trail West and October 20–23 in Methodist Front West. Property owners in these service areas are asked to cut and clear brush and trees ahead of time and pile them at their curbs for pickup.

Since its launch in 2020, Chaffee Chips has assisted more than 900 landowners in creating 2,800 piles of slash, which have been chipped on site by the Colorado State Forest Service or hauled away by Chaffee County Fire Protection District firefighters.

The program reduces the threat of wildfire by removing potential fuels around homes and neighborhoods.

Landowners interested in further reducing wildfire risks can request a free wildfire risk assessment from a Colorado State forester by calling 719-539-2579.
