’Tis the season for Christmas tree harvesting and federal land agencies are opening the gates for holiday tradition seekers.

The Bureau of Land Management is now selling permits that allow the public to cut Christmas trees in designated areas on BLM-managed lands. Before heading out, officials encourage permit holders to download or pick up a map from a local field office or from blm.gov to ensure they’re cutting only in approved locations. Each permit costs $10.

The BLM recommends coming prepared for winter conditions. Suggested gear includes a handsaw, eye protection, rope or twine, extra food, blankets, tire chains, a shovel, and other emergency supplies.

For those planning to visit National Forest lands instead, Christmas tree cutting permits are also available from the U.S. Forest Service, offering another option for do-it-yourself holiday tree hunters.
