Avalanche Watch: Fourth Avalanche Death of the Season Recorded

An Avalanche Watch is in effect for the Steamboat and Flat Tops, Front Range, Vail and Summit County, Sawatch, Aspen, Gunnison, North and South San Juan, and Sangre de Cristo zones.

A strong storm is approaching Colorado. Snowfall will begin on Monday with heavy snowfall overnight and into Tuesday. This new snow will fall on a very weak snowpack. Large, dangerous, human-triggered avalanches will be very likely on Tuesday in many parts of Colorado.

Pay attention to changing conditions and increasing avalanche danger Monday night and on Tuesday.

A solo backcountry skier was killed in an avalanche Saturday on Berthoud Pass in Grand County.

The skier was found in the area of Chimney Chute in the First Creek Drainage of Berthoud Pass.

The avalanche death is the fourth of the season.

Before heading out into the backcountry, individuals should always check the Avalanche Information Center’s avalanche forecast, which rates the danger on a scale from low to extreme.

The current avalanche danger in our area is Considerable.
