Highway 50 over Monarch Pass was closed for much of yesterday after an avalanche impacted the area, according to transportation officials.
The Colorado Department of Transportation reported the closure extended between Monarch Peak Campground, located about one mile west of Garfield, as crews worked to assess conditions and ensure the roadway was safe for travel.
The pass has since reopened to traffic, but drivers are urged to use extreme caution. Road conditions remain icy and slick, creating potentially hazardous travel conditions across the pass.
Motorists are encouraged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and stay alert while traveling through the area as conditions continue to improve.
