Avalanche advisories have been issued for much of Colorado’s high country as dangerous backcountry conditions develop following last week’s heavy snowfall.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) warns that many mountain slopes are primed for both human-triggered and naturally occurring avalanches. The recent snow fell on top of an already weak and unstable snowpack, significantly increasing the risk of slides across a wide range of elevations and aspects.

Forecasters say the combination of fresh snow and underlying weak layers has created especially hazardous conditions in avalanche-prone terrain.

Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended at this time. Backcountry users are urged to check the latest forecasts and avoid steep slopes and runout zones until conditions improve.
