In a surprising development, AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) members are being sent home early following a new executive order from President Donald Trump.

According to an email from AmeriCorps, the decision aligns with the administration’s new operational priorities, stating that AmeriCorps “is working within new operational parameters that impact the program’s ability to sustain program operations.”

Kent Maxwell, coordinator for Colorado Firecamp, a nonprofit based in Salida, spoke to 9News about the impact of the decision. Maxwell has worked with AmeriCorps teams for 20 years and said he recently had to send home a group after three months of service.

Firecamp trains the next generation of wildland firefighters, and Maxwell had been expecting a new team this summer. The executive order now forces the organization to pause deployment assignments indefinitely.

This sudden shift has created uncertainty for nonprofits and public service partners who rely on AmeriCorps members for community projects and wildfire readiness programs.
