Governor Jared Polis has requested expedited FEMA funding to help repair the damage caused by the historic flooding in Southcentral Colorado.
According to the Pagosa Springs Sun, the request seeks the funding for Archuleta and Rio Grande counties following severe storms that occurred from Oct. 22-25. If approved, the declaration would provide federal assistance to help repair damaged infrastructure and reduce future flood risks.
The Colorado Department of Transportation is reporting temporary fixes to bridges, roads damaged but that permanent repairs will not be completed until summer 2027 at the earliest.
Not only humans evacuated during the flood, but many ranchers had to find ways to rescue their horses and other animals. Recovery for residents consists of clearing massive debris and silt in addition to repairing or rebuilding homes and businesses.
Flooding also damaged wastewater facilities and caused sewage spills causing a public health issue.
