t’s already back to school time. This means there will be kids walking, riding their bikes and probably using many forms of non-traditional transportation. There are different laws for each of these types of vehicles and it is important for everyone to be acquainted with how they work.
For example, you may have seen some of the low-powered scooters around town. These vehicles are self-propelled and designed primarily for use on roadways with not more than three wheels in contact with the ground and no manual clutch. The engine is less than 50 cc and usually tops out at 30mph.
This scooter requires a driver’s license, a registration sticker and insurance. Operators or passengers below the age of 18 are required to wear an approved DOT helmet and goggles.
Minibikes, pocket bikes, kamikaze boards, go-peds and stand-up scooters are not street legal. In light of recent reports to the local police, please read the laws before you send your student out on any alternative transportation to keep everyone safe.
