A lieutenant at the Federal Correctional Complex Florence is facing federal charges after investigators alleged he accepted money in exchange for smuggling contraband into a prison facility.
According to court documents, Michael Popma worked as a supervisor overseeing both staff and inmates. Prosecutors allege that Popma agreed to bring prohibited items into the Federal Prison Camp, a low-security facility, in exchange for cash payments.
Investigators claim the contraband included cell phones, vaping devices, and alcohol. Court records allege that over a four-month period, Popma received more than $15,000 for smuggling 123 cell phones, 415 vaping devices, and 274 bottles of alcohol into the facility.
A federal grand jury has indicted Popma on charges including conspiracy, bribery, and providing contraband in prison.
As with all criminal cases, the indictment contains allegations, and Popma is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
