Salida, CO — September 8, 2025
Joe Smith, a lifelong Salida resident and current Salida School Board President, has officially announced his candidacy for the at-large seat in the upcoming November 2025 school board election. Smith brings a strong record of community service and leadership. His decision to run for a final term reflects his continued commitment to supporting all students, families, and educators across the district. “Our schools are the foundation of this community,” said Smith. “I’m proud of the accomplishments we’ve achieved throughout my tenure, but there is more work to be done and areas we can continue to improve. I’m seeking re-election to continue to lead the district to accomplish our strategic goals and objectives.” During his time on the board, Smith has championed:
– Fiscal responsibility and transparency
– Competitive salaries and benefits for teachers and staff
– Expanded educational opportunities for students
– Review of district assets for current needs and future growth
– Comprehensive and thorough audit of the district’s policies
Smith believes the district’s most significant achievement during his time on the Board is annexation into the Colorado Mountain College (CMC) taxing district. This has allowed the district to provide more affordable higher education opportunities for local students, strengthened the district’s vision and graduation requirements for both post-secondary and career readiness, as well as providing a robust internship program for students with the business community. Smith feels strongly that the CMC annexation will be the most impactful decision Salida invested in for students and the community for decades to come. “Salida is my hometown, and I am fortunate to live, work, and raise my family in the community that I was born and raised in,” Smith stated. “I have four daughters of various ages throughout the district, so it’s been fun to be a part of the impact on their education. I never knew when I started the impacts that I would have on the community or how much I would enjoy the role. Being on the board has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done in my life. I appreciate all the support I’ve had over the years and am hopeful to be re-elected and continue to serve in a role that I truly enjoy.”
