As expected, activity with the Decker Fire picked up yesterday with the windy conditions, but remained higher on the mountain above the management action points.

As the fire continues to approach these action points, firefighters will be proactive to ensure the fire remains in the Wilderness area.  There has been no significant movement of the fire.  Interior pockets of dead and down fuel components continue to be the main driver for fire activity. 

A closure order remains in effect for portions of the Decker Fire area on National Forest lands.  The closure includes Forest Service roads 101 and 101A and the Rainbow Trail south of Forest Service road 108 to the 1403 Trail. 

The Decker Fire, burning 9 miles south of Salida, was mapped yesterday at 1,150 acres. 127 firefighting personnel are currently working the fire.

South winds will be gusting to 30 mph this weekend which means the Decker Fire will be active through Sunday.    

The Decker Fire is being used to remove high risk fuels from the landscape to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire in the future and to limit fire spread to private lands. 

Fire and smoke will continue to be seen from Salida and the Highway 50 and 285 corridors.
