Collisions between automobiles and wildlife happens year-round in Colorado, but October through December is the peak season due to animals moving to lower elevations.

Last year, State Troopers responded to nearly 4,000 crashes involving wildlife. Deer and elk are the most frequently struck animals. Some of the highest risk roads for crashes in the state includes Highway 50 from Gunnison to Blue Mesa, U.S. 285 and Highway 24.

Drivers should scan roads and shoulders for movement while driving, especially at night, don’t exceed the speed limit, and use your bright lights when safe to do so.
