History was preserved last week as volunteers from the Salida Regional Library and the Salida Museum joined Steve Chapman of Salida Walking Tours to move 76 years of newspaper archives, dating through 1956, into permanent storage.

The effort came after The Mountain Mail sold the building it had occupied for more than a century, putting the historic newspapers at risk of being lost.

Chapman said one of the biggest challenges during the move was pushing heavy newspaper carts up D Street to the museum.

Joy Jack of the Salida Regional Library will now review the archives for quality before they are sent to the State Library in Denver for digitization.

Community members are still being asked to help secure storage space for newspapers dating from 1957 through 2026. Anyone with a safe and secure storage location is encouraged to contact the Salida Library.
