The majority of the vote in the Republican primary in Chaffee County Tuesday went to Donald J. Trump with 2,883 votes or 60.2 percent.

Nikki Haley received 1,762 votes or 36.79 percent of the Republican ballots in the county.

In the Democratic primary, incumbent Joe Biden won with 2,525 votes, or 83.16 percent.

Under the provisions of Colorado Revised Statutes, the Colorado Democratic party also had a choice of a “Noncommitted Delegate” on its ballot. Of the 3,036 Democratic votes cast in Chaffee County, 266 were for that delegate.

Voter turnout for the Republican primary was 4,789. The Democratic primary turnout was 3,036. Unaffiliated voters in Colorado have the opportunity to vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary.

 Statewide, Trump succeeded in accumulating 63.72 percent of the votes on the Republican ballot, or 494,217 votes. Haley came in with 261,067 votes or 33.42 percent.

On the Democratic ballot, Biden received 427,225 votes, or 84.19 percent of all Democratic votes.

The statewide vote count for the noncommitted delegate was 38,726 or 7.63 percent.

The U.S. Supreme Court, Monday morning, issued a decision reversing a Colorado Supreme Court decision to keep Trump off the Colorado Primary ballot, paving the way for votes cast for the former president to be counted. Trumps’ name was already on the Republican ballot, so no adjustments were necessary.

Chaffee County Clerk and Recorder Lori Mitchell said Tuesday evening the primary “went great.”

There now follows an eight-day period to perform ballot cures, followed by a risk limiting state audit and a canvass. After that process the official results will be reported.
