The Central Colorado Humanists will host its monthly Sunday Science program on June 7, featuring a presentation titled “The Inefficiency of Our Food System.”
Doors open at 9:30 a.m., with the presentation beginning promptly at 10 a.m.
Presenter John Mattingly will examine the current food distribution system and its reliance on fossil fuels, while exploring possible alternatives and improvements with audience participation.
The discussion will cover the energy required at every stage of food production—from plants capturing solar energy, to transportation, livestock production, food processing, and delivery to consumers. Mattingly will also discuss how growing demand for out-of-season produce and meat may challenge the long-term sustainability of the current system.
A longtime Colorado gardener, commercial farmer, and rancher, Mattingly has spent more than 50 years working in agriculture. He attended the University of Colorado Law School with a focus on water law and has contributed articles to agricultural trade publications and Colorado Central Magazine. He currently resides in the northern San Luis Valley.
Sunday Science is presented by Central Colorado Humanists on the first Sunday of each month. Admission is free, and members of the public are welcome to attend.
