A student was bitten by a Custer County Sheriff’s Office K-9 during a basketball game last week at Custer County High School.

The incident occurred while deputies were on campus providing security for the game. According to the sheriff’s office, K-9 Zara was present alongside her handler as part of the department’s standard security presence at school events.

Authorities say the situation unfolded when several students ran outside the gymnasium near the K-9 team, startling the dog. During the commotion, Zara bit one student.

The sheriff’s office says the student was evaluated at a local medical center following the incident. Officials also stated they have offered to cover the student’s medical expenses.

No additional details about the student’s condition have been released.
