Persistent snowfall and gusty winds will continue across the Continental Divide today (Dec. 28th), resulting in blowing snow and limited visibility over mountain peaks and passes.
Wind gusts up to 60 mph will be possible in the mountains and snow accumulations will range from 1 to 3 inches in the valleys, 3 to 6 inches up north, and up to 2 feet over the San Juan Mountains.
Snowfall is expected to continue along the Continental Divide through the first weekend of 2022 with snow becoming heavy again starting Thursday (Dec. 30th). The eastern San Juan mountains will continue to see the heaviest accumulation with an additional 1 to 2 feet possible by Saturday, January 1st.
Up to an additional foot or more will be possible across the eastern Sawatch range with 4 to 8 inches across the remainder of the southwest and central mountains.
Snow along with much colder temperatures are expected beginning Friday (Dec. 31st). Light snowfall accumulations will be possible through New Years’ Eve into New Year’s Day.
According to the National Weather Service, there is still some uncertainty on the track and strength of the New Year’s storm system as it crosses the mountains which makes snow amounts still prone to change.
