Return to Nature Funeral Home in Penrose Scheduled for Demolition Due to Hazardous Materials

The Return to Nature Funeral Home in Penrose is scheduled to be demolished according to the Environmental Protection Agency. 

The EPA say that after a review of the building and property, it is necessary to destroy the building to safely remove biological and hazardous materials that were found in the building. The EPA says that the demolition is scheduled for January, though the exact date has not been released.

The Return to Nature Funeral Home came under investigation in October following reports of a foul odor in the area. Investigators said they found almost 200 bodies in various states of decomposition inside the building. 

The owners of the funeral home, Jon and Carie Hallford are being held in the El Paso County jail on charges of abuse of a corpse, fraud and money laundering. The Hallford’s are being held on a $2 million cash only bond and their next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 5th.
