Traffic will be reduced to single lane alternating traffic

Fremont and Custer Counties — The Colorado Department of Transportation, with its contract partner United Companies, will begin a highway resurfacing project on March 16 on Colorado Highway 69 from Hillside to Texas Creek.

Work on CO 69, from Mile Point 71.5 (12 miles north of Westcliffe) to MP 82.6 (just south of US 50), will include resurfacing of the north- and southbound lanes, constructing a maintenance pull-off, installing new guardrails to meet updated safety standards, striping, and new signage. Bridge deck repairs will also occur at MP 77.25.

The project is scheduled for completion in August 2026. This resurfacing work is essential for improving and prolonging the life of the road surface and will enhance safety for motorists by providing a smoother road surface.

“The resurfacing will prolong the life of the road surface,” said CDOT Regional Transportation Director Shane Ferguson. “The project’s new striping will produce clearer roadway lines, and the upgraded guardrail systems will increase safety through this stretch of highway. The road will be safer, have better ride quality and ensure a smoother drive for motorists.”

Traffic Impacts

Beginning March 16, motorists and area residents can expect the following impacts during construction:

  • Work will occur during daytime hours – 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday through Friday.
  • Traffic will be reduced to a single lane alternating traffic in the work zone, guided by flaggers.
  • Delays of up to 15 minutes can be expected during working hours.
