A judge on Tuesday approved plea agreements for Jon and Carie Hallford, the couple at the center of a shocking investigation involving a southern Colorado funeral home.
The Hallfords operated the Return to Nature Funeral Home in Penrose, where authorities discovered nearly 200 decomposing bodies in various stages of neglect in 2023. The findings sparked national outrage and led to multiple criminal charges against the couple.
Under the terms of his plea agreement, Jon Hallford faces a prison sentence ranging from 30 to 50 years. Carie Hallford could be sentenced to 25 to 35 years in prison under her agreement.
Sentencing hearings are scheduled for the coming months, with Jon Hallford set to be sentenced in February and Carie Hallford in April.
The case remains one of the most disturbing funeral home scandals in recent U.S. history, raising ongoing questions about oversight and regulation within the death care industry.
