[UPDATE] Today’s pile burn near Mt. Shavano in Chaffee County has been postponed.

Winds in the project area today are stronger than were predicted yesterday. Crews will look for favorable conditions to conduct the Mt. Shavano burn next week.

–Original Story–

The Bureau of Land Management will be conducting pile burns in the Mt. Shavano area today and tomorrow.

The burn area is located northwest of Poncha Springs, 7 miles west of Salida.

Crews will be burning 500 piles over 138 acres.

There is approximately a foot of snow on the ground throughout the burn area.  Winds are expected, which should aid in smoke dispersion.  Smoke may accumulate in low-lying areas.

Smoke will be visible from Highways 285 and 50 and from Poncha Springs and Salida.

Personnel will be on the scene monitoring the burns.
