The U.S. Forest Service is reminding visitors to follow strict campfire safety guidelines after dozens of abandoned campfires were found over the Memorial Day weekend.
During patrols, Forest Service crews discovered four wildfires — one caused by lightning, and three determined to be human-caused. Fortunately, all were contained quickly, but the incidents highlight the ongoing wildfire risk in Colorado’s forests.
✅ If you plan to build a campfire, officials urge you to follow these essential safety steps:
- Clear the area of dry vegetation and debris
- Never leave your campfire unattended
- Keep plenty of water and a shovel nearby
- Extinguish your fire completely using the “drown, stir, and repeat” method until it is cold to the touch
🔥 Even one unattended campfire can lead to a dangerous wildfire, especially in dry and windy conditions.
